Role

I was the sole UX designer and website builder on a team comprising of a product owner (the Associate CIO for Research), content writer, and researcher. I was responsible for managing the overall design and development process of this project, while collaborating with the rest of the team on ideation and written content. I was also responsible for ongoing maintenance of this website.

Analysis

The Problem

The website needed icons that were specific to the categories that would be displayed on the main page. We needed the icons to meet branding requirements and to indicate what the category was.

Design

I brainstormed design ideas for different categories. A few drafts ensued.

Development

Once we solidified which icons we would use, I got started in Adobe Illustrator! I really enjoyed the development segment of this project.

I find it to be best to name each layer to indicate what that layer contributes to the overall image; this ensures easy navigation to editing details.

Evaluation

The SVG icons fit really well into the website and met the needs we had. The product manager and team were excited to have custom icons created for their website and mentioned it in their presentations.

Challenges

I had a beginner’s experience with Adobe Illustrator before starting this project; I was eager to use the Adobe tools because I enjoy developing digital products. Although many of it was new to me, I enjoyed the learning and development process. It was satisfying to see the positive results of my effort.

The most challenging part of this project was during ideation! We had various categories and had to design unique icons that would help differentiate them all effectively.  Through many drafts and creative brainstorming we were able to do so.
